The medieval town of Portimão was defended from attack by pirates and other marauders by turreted walls. Most of the fortified walls have disappeared, but there is a section of about a kilometre, which forms a more or less triangular shape. At the three angles are the gates of Porta da Serra, Porta de São João and the wicket gate of Postigo dos Fumeiros. The stretch of wall between these three gates is still in its original complete state.
