About 15 km north of Guimarães is the Iron Age settlement of Citânia de Briteiros. Discovered in 1875, it is a fine example of pre-roman Castro Culture. The site was explored by Martins Sarmento, the famous archaeologist who was awarded the French Legion of Honour for his work. The settlement is believed to have been inhabited from about 300 BC to 300 AD and the foundations of about 150 stone dwellings remain, two of which have been restored. Artefacts can be seen in the nearby Museu da Cultural Castreja, but do visit the Martins Sarmento Museum in Guimarães.
