The walled citadel was built in 1130 by Fernão Mendes, brother-in- law to King Afonso Henriques. In 1187 King Sancho I built the castle (later strengthened by King João I) with its blue schist walls, 15 towers and 4 portals. Next to the castle, the Torre da Princesa held captive a number of unfortunate wives and mistresses, including Dona Leonor, wife of a Duke of Bragança, who had been suspected of adultery and was later murdered. The citadel is extremely well preserved and some of the original houses are still occupied. There are magnificent views of the Parque Natural de Montesinho.
