Cinfães is located 23 km southwest of Resende and is situated above the River Douro and below the foothills of the Serra de Montemuro; Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was brought up in this area. The 12th century Santa Maria Maior church is located about 11km west of Cinfães at Tarouquela and has a Romanesque column portal. About 8 km further on is Nossa Senhora da Natividade, the parish church of Escamarão , which has azulejos and fresco remains. For those who enjoy water sports, there are several beaches on the River Douro close to the Carrapatelo dam.
