The Church of the Sacred Heart, known locally as Igreja do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, is unusual; it is on a very small piece of land, in a densely populated area in the centre of Lisbon and thus required an innovative approach. Designed by the noted architects Nuno Teotónio Pereira and Nuno Portas, it was built between 1962 and 1970. The main body of the church and its annexes are spread over various levels and unity achieved with a central open area, enabling people to circulate and still participate during mass. The entrance is from the Rua Camilo Castelo Branco.
