The original Chapel on this site was dedicated to St Mary of the Martyrs by Afonso Henriques, in thanksgiving for the liberation of Lisbon from the Moors in 1147. It was Lisbon’s first Catholic Church and built in its oldest parish. The chapel was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, but the relics of the Holy Martyrs were saved and are now in the Altar of Souls in the present church, built in 1769 by the architect Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos. The door has a relief by Francisco Leal Garcia, depicting Portugal’s first king kneeling in thanks for his victory.
