On the south side of the Largo do Chiado, opposite the Loreto church, is the Igreja da Encarnaçao; both churches incorporate parts of one of the old gateways to the city. The initial church, destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, was rebuilt in 1784 by Manuel de Sousa within the guidelines of the Marquis of Pombal. The fine Baroque façade has two niches with statues of St. Catarina and Nossa Senhora do Loreto, which were from the medieval wall. Inside there is a single nave and on the main altar a magnificent sculpture of Our Lady of Incarnation by Machado de Castro.
