The Igreja do Hospital de Jesus Cristo was built between 1592 and 1694 under the patronage of Archbishop Miguel de Castro to house the Third Order of St Francis. Its austere and sober façade, typical of the Portuguese "plain style" of architecture, is relieved by twin towers. Inside there is a fine 17th century marble altarpiece with Mannerist paintings displayed on an altar, which were brought from the Igreja de Santa Clara during its restoration in the mid-20th century. Other features are the gilt carving on the altars and the painted ceilings.
