The Church of St James was built in the 16th century and extensively rebuilt in the 18th. Its facade is ’rocaille’ in style, with two towers and a 16th century Manueline doorway. There is also a Manueline door on the south facade. Two interesting and rare columns, with sculpted shafts, survive from the original church. There are gilded carved retables in the main and side chapels and an important collection of statues, including a 17th century Indo-Portuguese Crucifixion in ivory and a 16th century St Manuel. The 16th century Chapel of Our Lord Jesus Crucified contains renaissance medallions of St Peter and St Paul.
