The church of St Francis, situated in the Largo da Igreja da Ordem Terceira, was constructed, between 1701 and 1709. It was built for the secular laypeople of the Franciscan Order. The simplicity of the façade contrasts with the interior decoration, which is exquisite. On the outside, the outstanding feature is the emblem of the Franciscans, which is a crucifix above the crossed arms of Christ and St Francis both bearing the marks of the stigmata. The main chapel is embellished with golden carvings, with blue and white tile panels depicting the life of St Francis of Assisi and a rare image of Santo António.
