The Parish Church of Loulé was built on the site of a former mosque in the late 13th/early 14th century, and restored in the 16th. The pointed arch doorway on the façade is one of the few remaining examples of Gothic architecture in the region. The bell tower, adapted from a Muslim minaret, is decorated in baroque style. An ancient column, of unknown origin, is inserted within the tower. The three-nave interior includes capitals decorated with sculpted leaves, believed to be the work of Muslim artists. The columns, of different heights, seem to have been built from Roman or Arab materials.
