The Igreja de São Pedro has an attractive façade and a churchyard providing a splendid view over the harbour. Construction works started in the 15th century, but it took more than two centuries to finish the church. Despite the many changes made to the initial structure over time, its original precious gilded woodcarvings, among which a richly ornamented high altar, survived. Among other treasures, a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary ‘of the Pains’, several images and reliquaries from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and the painting ‘Feast of Pentecost’ by the Portuguese artist Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho.
