Lisbon is rightly famous for its historic churches, but, as the city expanded, new suburbs developed and created the opportunity for modern church architecture. One of these new suburbs is popularly known as Avenidas Novas and the Church of São João de Deus was designed by architect António Lino and built here in 1953. Monumental and functional, beautiful and inspirational, it is designed so that the congregation and the altar are in close proximity. António Lino was also the architect responsible for the design of the 75 metre high base of the Cristo Rei monument.
