The Church of Santa Maria was constructed on the site of a mosque in the 13th century. The clock tower belongs to the original building, although decorative additions were made later. The towers are (unusually) at the head of the church. In the main chapel there are the tombs of the seven knights of the Order of Sant´Iago and Paio Peres Correia. In the Chapels of the Souls is an 18th century retable featuring a 17th century religious icon. Among the church treasures (too numerous to detail) is a Japanese missal lectern dating from the 16th or 17th century.
