The church of Santa Maria was originally built in the 12th century by Afonso Henriques, after capturing Sintra from the Moors; it has been considerably changed over the ages. Modified in the late 13th early 14th centuries, it was again altered after damage caused by the 1755 earthquake. Today it is a Gothic/Romanesque three-nave church with finely worked capitals, one of the few medieval traces to survive. Notable features include the 16th century double entrance with a classical column in the centre and an excellent 17th century sculpture of Our Lady of Conception. Visits are subject to arrangement in advance.
