The Setubal cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria da Graça; it was built in the 16th century to replace a small Roman Gothic chapel. The architect was António Rodrigues and the church was built in the Mannerist style. The outstanding features are the splendid 18th century blue and white tiled panels, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the carved gilt woodwork of the altar decoration from the 17th and 18th centuries. The painted frescoes on the columns supporting the nave are also worthy of note.
