Within the castle walls are the ruins of the Gothic church of Nossa Senhora da Pena dating back to the 12th century. It was originally built on the instructions of Afonso Henriques and was renovated in the 13th, 14th and 16th centuries by King Dinis, King Joćo I and King Manuel I respectively. In 1545, when the diocese of Leiria was created, it was used as the cathedral whilst the new cathedral was under construction. Today the church is little more than a roofless shell.
