On the north side of the Largo do Chiado is the church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto, also known as Igreja dos Italianos as it was the Italian community who brought worship of Our Lady of Loreto to Portugal. The present church dates from 1676 after the previous building was destroyed by fire in 1651. In 1784, after the great earthquake, further rebuilding took place under the opera house architect J. da Costa e Silva; the impressive Mannerist façade was retained. The internal highlight is the painted ceiling over the single nave by Pedro Alexandrino, depicting the Virgin of Loreto.
