Housed in Diogo’s Wine Shop, opposite the Infante Shopping Centre and close to the Rotunda do Infanta, the Christopher Columbus museum is also known as the Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos Library Museum. Barbeito, the founder of the world renowned Vinhos Barbeito (Madeira) Wine Company, was also one of the world’s largest collectors of material on the great explorer. The museum contains books, rare coins, maps, prints and articles relating to Columbus and the history of Madeira. It was disclosed in an interview in 1978 that Barbeito had around 18,000 books in his personal library, some dating back to the 16th century.
