Built in 1959 and modelled on the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro, this imposing monument is a symbol of thanks to God that Portugal was spared the horrors of World War II. The statue of Christ stands with arms open to Lisbon. It is 28m high, reached by lift, and stands on an 82m high pedestal in the form of four arches. Getting to the monument is an enjoyable experience; take the ferry across the river Tagus from the Cais do Sodre Station to Cacilhas and then the 101 bus to the monument.
