Previously the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Chiado Museum reopened in 1994 in a renovated and enlarged building, which was previously the Convent of São Francisco. The building work was funded by the French Government and carried out under the supervision of the renowned French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, who was responsible for one of the wings of the Louvre museum in Paris. The collection covering the period 1850-1950 mainly features the foremost Portuguese artists of the period, although there are some international works. The latter include Rodin’s masterpiece The Bronze Age.
