Attractively situated beside the Tâmega River, the town of Chaves was founded in 78 AD by the Romans, who were attracted by nearby gold deposits and the thermal springs. Appreciate the town’s history by wandering through the medieval quarter, where the balconies at the top of the narrow multi-storied houses almost touch those of the houses opposite. There are two additional pilgrimage sites worthy of mention, Our Lady of Aparecida in the village of Calvão, famous for an apparition of the Virgin in 1833 and Our Lady of the Engaranho in Castelões. Chaves is famous throughout Portugal for its smoked hams.
