The original Chaves castle was built on the site of an old Roman fortress and later rebuilt by King Dinis in the 13th/14th century. Virtually all that remains today is the quadrangular castle keep which, with its impressive battlements stands 28 metres high, overlooks Praça de Camões. Since 1978 the keep has housed the Military Museum which displays suits of armour, uniforms and other military regalia. The upper floors cover World War I, Portugal’s colonial wars and the 1912 attack by Royalists from Spain. There are fine views from the battlements and the site is surrounded by beautifully kept gardens.
