In the 17th and 18th centuries the Chapel of the Espirito Santo (Holy Spirit) was a place of pilgrimage for Christians from all over the Algarve and it retains a number of valuable works of art from that period. It is a baroque building of great simplicity, but with a great deal of charm. The interior is decorated with carpet-style polychrome tiles. These compositions (azulejo de tapete, as they were called) of elaborately framed compositions with friezes and borders, were produced in great numbers during the 17th century. The altar is carved and gilded, with a 17th century rail made of lignum vitae.
