The Chapel of the Apparitions marks the site of the Holm-oak tree, where the apparition took place. The tree has long since disappeared, removed twig by twig by fervent pilgrims, in its place is a marble pillar with the statue of the Virgin Mary. The bullet used in the 1981 attempt to assassinate Pope John Paul II is inside the Virgin’s crown. The chapel was the first building erected in the Cova da Iria and was built at the request of Our Lady during one of the apparitions. It receives about four million visitors a year.
