The Capela de São José (chapel of St Joseph) dates back to the days before Portimão grew into a city. It has a plain façade with a curved pediment and is located in the oldest part of the original town. It is situated opposite the naval shipyards and the Largo da Barca, which was where the ferry across the river used to dock in the days before the bridge was built. The area around the chapel is plentifully endowed with traditional Portuguese sardine bars and restaurants.
