The chapel of São Miguel do Fetal was built in the first half of the 18th century on the site of an extremely old church which housed the tomb of Dom Rodrigo, the last of the Visigoth kings in the Iberian Peninsula. He was defeated and killed at the battle of Guadalete on 19th July 711, an event that marked the beginning of the Muslim conquest of Hispania. He was brought here, where his ashes are kept in a granite coffin, all that remains of the original building.
