Approximately twelve kilometres south of Montemor-o-Novo is the small typically Alentejan village of Escoural, famous for the nearby Neolithic caves with their strangely-shaped stalagmites and prehistoric wall paintings. If you travel about six kilometres east of the caves you will come to an unusual dolmen, the Chapel of São Brissos Cromlech. Dolmens are Neolithic structures, usually comprised of a large horizontal capstone supported by a number of smaller vertical stones. It is believed that they were associated with the burial of important personages. This Megalithic funerary monument has been adapted into a Christian chapel.
