Located away from the city centre and known to be one of Guarda’s oldest monuments, a certain mystery surrounds the Chapel of Our Lady of Milieu. It is believed to date back to before the 12th century and to have been a place of worship during Moorish times, but its exact origin remains unknown. In the late 13th century there are references to the Nossa Senhora do Mileu festival which, as it was on the pilgrims’ route to Santiago de Compostela, gained in popularity from the 15th century onwards. The building is Romanesque and there are some interesting artistic finishes internally.
