One of the chapels of the Franciscan Church, the Capela dos Ossos (chapel of bones) was built by 16th century monks who wished to pass on the message that life was a transitory state. This is spelled out on a painted notice over the entrance door ‘Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos’ translated as: Our bones that are here await yours! The walls and central piers are lined with human skulls and bones bedded in cement. Rumours abound; it is said they were from soldiers killed in battle or those who died in the plague. A ghoulish experience.
