The charming village of Chacim is located approximately 13 km southeast of Macedo de Cavaleiros. The local pillory is dated 1769, but the parish church is believed to be 12th century. It has a clock and bell tower and a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. Nearby is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Balsamão (see separate entry). The village still celebrates its 9th century legend, that, led by an unknown woman, the villagers staged a revolt against the ancient ‘jus primae noctis’ (the lord of the manor’s first night rights to the bride) and slaughtered the local lord and his servants.
