The state acquired the Quinta Visconde de Sacavém and the Ceramics Museum opened there in 1983. The museum includes exhibits of Caldas da Rainha pottery from the 17th to the first half of the 20th century and also from other Portuguese and foreign centres. One of the most important sections is that devoted to a representative collection of the work of the local great master Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846-1905). Contemporary hand-made ceramic items are also on display by artists including Llorens Artigas, Júlio Pomar and Manuel Cargaleiro. The items from overseas countries include France, Spain, Italy, Holland, Belgium and China.
