The well preserved Roman tower of Centum Cellas, also known as the Torre de Colmeal, is located about 2 km north of Belmonte. Ongoing excavations have revealed that it was not an isolated building, but part of a complex and that it incorporated a 1st century BC villa built for a wealthy Roman. At some stage in the Middle Ages, a chapel dedicated to St Cornelius was built on the ruins of this villa. The exact role of the structure has yet to be determined, although archaeological theories abound. Perhaps after visiting you will have your own theory.
