Located 26 km northwest of Guarda at the foot of the Serra da Estrela mountains, Celerico da Beira has an old castle which was rebuilt by King Dinis in the 14th century. Sacked by the Spanish in 1762, it now consists of the perimeter walls, two towers and the keep. The town is famous for its cheese (see separate entry) and its son Sacadura Cabral, the first Portuguese to fly across the Atlantic in 1922. The parish church of Santa Maria, restored in the 18th century, served as a hospital for English troops in the Peninsular War.
