Built on the site of a mosque, the original 13th century church was all but destroyed by the English when they attacked the city in 1596. The reconstruction has resulted in a mixture of Baroque and Renaissance styles. The cathedral is best known for its azuelos and side chapels, such as Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres (Our Lady of Pleasures), which is a magnificent example of baroque art. It contains gilded carvings, inlaid marble, tiles and paintings. The large 18th century organ with Chinese motifs and other unique features is well known to international organists.
