Viana do Castelo’s cathedral, also referred to as the Igreja Matriz, was built early in the 15th century but has been enlarged and remodelled several times since. It was substantially altered in the 19th century. The façade has two Romanesque crenellated towers and a main entrance distinguished by the surrounding mouldings decorated with the Apostles. Internally the outstanding features are the baptismal font and the multi-coloured wood carvings, mainly from the 17th century. Also of interest is a 16th century painting on wood (Senhora da Consolação Chapel) and appropriately, in the Seafarers Chapel, a miniature galleon.
