It is said that Idanha-a-Velha is the birthplace of the Visigoth King Wamba and had its own bishop until 1199. The early 16th century present building, referred to as the Cathedral, stands on the site of an earlier Christian church from Visigoth times. The baptistry remains from the time of the Suevi and the basilica is from the Visigothic period. Nearby are the ruins of the former Bishop’s Palace and, next to the remains of south gate, part of a Roman residence (1st to 3rd centuries) cut in half by the building of the fortified walls in the 4th century.
