The present fortress like-cathedral was built on the initiative of King João I. Work commenced in 1390 but was not completed until about 1540. Influenced by the Batalha Monastery, amongst those associated with its design and construction are David Huguet and Diogo Boitac. Gothic and Manueline in style, this has been accentuated by the removal of subsequent additions by the architect Rosendo Carvalheira in the late 19th century. The beautiful Manueline main portal leads to a graceful interior, highlighted by the altarpiece in Ançã stone with 100 carved figures, the work of João de Ruão in 1552.
