In the 1490s King Manuel I sent architect Pèro Anes to Madeira to design and construct this cathedral, which was completed in 1514 and has remained virtually untouched ever since. It was the first overseas Portuguese cathedral and was built in late Gothic style utilising local basalt stone. The main highlights are the beautiful inlaid carved wood ceiling and the choir stalls depicting saints, prophets and apostles in 16th century costume, well contrasted in gold against a blue background. Inside and above the Gothic main door is the Portuguese coat of arms.
