The two storey cloister to the cathedral is worthy of particular attention and was built on the site of a royal palace demolished for this purpose. The lower gallery dates from the Renaissance and the upper from the first half of the 18th century. The artistry displayed in the carved granite work is masterly. The 17th century azulejo tile panels depict scenes from the life of São Teotónio, the patron saint of Viseu. During the course of work in 1918 a Roman-Gothic door, a surviving remnant of the original cathedral, was found in the north wing of the cloisters.
