Casével is another of the pretty Alentejo villages worth visiting for the sheer pleasure of driving through the countryside, but it is also worth going to see the bizarre contents of the Baroque parish church. Dating from the 14th century, the church was rebuilt during the 16th. Its greatest treasure is the Reliquary Head of St. Fabian. Believed to date from the 13th century, this natural-sized head is made with valuable silver and gold-plate. The face appears to express a sad smile. It was discovered recently that it has a human skull inside.
