Surrounded by vast plains, Castro Verde has been inhabited since pre-historic and Roman times. The town lies near the site where the legendary Battle of Ourique was fought in 1139, when Afonso Henriques defeated the Moors and declared himself the first king of Portugal. As well as the many chapels and churches, the recently restored traditional windmill in the main square is worthy of a visit. Castro Verde is the venue for the most important fair in the district of Beja and is famous for its rural character and ethnographic diversity. Handicrafts include typical woollen rugs, lace and pottery.
