Located at Santana, about 23 km northeast of Figueira da Foz, the roman settlement of Castro Santa Olaia was originally founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians. The site is on the top of a hill in a dominant position over the Mondego River estuary. Following excavations between 1915 and 1920 there are visible remains of houses and the street layout is apparent. The Municipal museum exhibits artefacts recovered from the site, including metal items and ceramics and also the large vase shaped containers used for the storage and transport of supplies.
