Castelo de Castro Marim is one of two fortifications in Castro Marim. It has a semi-circular outer wall, which contained the original settlement. Four turrets, a gate, the ruins of the 14th century Church of São Iago, the Governors’ Palace and some houses remain. Moorish in origin, the fortress would have protected the village, which was already an important port during Phoenician and Roman times. In 1242 the castle was captured by Don Paio Peres Correia during the reign of King Alfonso III. New battlements were built around the hilltop which created a castle within a castle.
