The remote old village of Castro Laboreiro is situated approximately 21 km southeast of Melgaço in the Serra da Peneda mountain range of the Parque Nacional da Peneda Gerês. It is best known for the breed of sheepdog, to which it gives its name. This is a remarkably intelligent dog, much favoured as a police dog for this reason by the Portuguese authorities. It is claimed by the locals as ‘the best dog in the world’ for its ability to guard; it is rare outside Portugal. The ruins of a medieval castle, the church and pillory can be seen in the village.
