Home to the remains of a 12th century Benedictine monastery, Castro de Avelãs lies four kilometres west of Brangança. Important regionally from the 12th to 16th centuries, it aided pilgrims on their way to Compostela. It was dissolved by papal bull in 1543 and abandoned. The remains display the large scale of the complex and an unusual Romanesque design in brick. There are three cylindrical chapels, one of three storeys and the others of two. In 1387 John of Gaunt stayed here on his way to grant the hand of his daughter Philippa, to King João I of Portugal.
