The castle of Vila Viçosa is a grand and imposing monument. The Porta de Evora, which faces to the west, is one of the five entrance gates built into the walls of this defensive fortress and dominates the wide avenue leading to the fortified town. The castle was built under the orders of King Dinis in the Middle Ages. The fortress was modified and had its defences improved in the 17th century, due to the War of Restoration of Portuguese Independence, in which it played an active part.
