The castle keep, built on the orders of King Dinis, dates from 1324. A commemorative stone bearing the coats of arms of both Portugal and Aragon (his wife was Isabel of Aragon) confirm this fact. Used as a prison from mid-14th century until late in the 18th century, it has now been completely renovated and is a military museum. Amongst the interesting items on display are weapons and a replica of a suit of armour worn by Afonso Henriques. There are also documents relating to the castle’s history. The tower provides outstanding views.
