The village of Hortinhas, nestling amidst the beautiful green farmland of Alandroal, has been inhabited since 3,000 BC. Evidence shows settlements during the Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages, although it appears from the records that it had long periods where it was abandoned. It became a fortified town in the 10th century when it was reoccupied by the Moors. The Old Castle was made a National Monument in 1910, and is the only classified archaeological small farm in the municipality of Alandroal.
