Castelo Velho (Old Castle) is found on a hill to the east of the present city and dates back to the occupation of the region in pre-historic times. The settlement, dating from the late Neolithic, was later fortified by the Celts (3rd and 2nd centuries BC) and subsequently by the Romans. Following the Germanic invasions of the 5th century the region lost its importance as a strategic post. When the area was later conquered by the Moors they built a new castle on the opposite hill and called it Cacém.
